There is ongoing discussion on the origins of Solitaire as a card-based video game. Others place it in France, where the game originally appeared in the early 1800s under the term “perseverance.” Still others place it in North Europe, where records of persistence games go all the way back to the late 18th century. Unlike many conventional card games that need a lot of players, Solitaire was a game of reflection.

The video game progressively influenced everyday life as card decks became a family staple. By the turn of the twentieth century, solitaire had become the most popular video game. Few words were needed to describe the kind of game that brought about its silent ubiquity.

Originally a card game for idlers, it has come to represent laziness, boredom at work, and wasted free time. When their boss wasn’t looking, almost all office workers from the 1990s may remember sneaking into a game of solitaire. Because this game was ready to play and didn’t require any setup, it became a well-known example of office disobedience and a within joke.

Also featured in the very early Microsoft version of Solitaire was the Klondike version of the video game, which many of us now call “the” version. Gamers’ brains were hardwired to get that visual minute, which transformed a straightforward benefit into a dopamine surge that made them want to play more video games and more.

How well Solitaire has adapted to every new advancement in modern technology is astounding. In the same way that personal computers led to laptops, which in turn led to smartphones, the evolution started with Solitaire. Since it was typically built into devices or was one of the earliest downloadable apps, it was a perfect fit for early mobile gaming in the 2000s. Due to its simplicity, it was ideal for small screens and minimal technology. In contrast to other video games that required processing power, intricate graphics, or internet connections, Solitaire built upon its simplicity. The rules and the deck were always the same, yet they were carefully crafted to always feel fresh. Because of its versatility, it managed to survive digitally while a number of other early games were abandoned.
